A big thank you goes out to all who attended, donated, planned, and helped make our Bowl for Deputy Hack event such a huge success! With your help, we were able to raise more than $2,500 dollars towards our year-long Oakmont Cares effort to support Deputy Hack’s recovery.
SOUTHFIELD, MI – On Sunday, May 20th, Oakmont Senior Communities will proudly host a family-friendly bowling fundraiser with proceeds going to support the ongoing recovery of Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy David Hack. Deputy Hack was injured in the line of duty on January 4th when he was struck by a passing motorist, and has since been undergoing treatment for severe injuries.
Hosted at Classic Lanes in Rochester Hills, attendees of the May 20th event will enjoy an afternoon of fun, with three games of bowling, shoes, live music, a pizza lunch, and soft drinks all included with the price of admission. Raffle baskets, giveaways, and additional items will also be available during the event for purchase. All monies raised from the event will go to benefit Deputy Hack and his family.
Tickets for the bowling fundraiser are still available and cost $20 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under. They can be purchased on the day of the event at the door or by contacting Janell Allison, Activity Director for Oakmont’s Rochester Assisted, Rochester Memory Care, Sterling Assisted, and Sterling Memory Care Communities, at 586-554-7200. The bowling fundraiser is just one part of a year-long Oakmont Cares fundraising initiative, which each year supports a local cause selected by staff members. Last year, the Oakmont Cares effort raised more than $22,000 to adopt Whiskey, a trained Medical Service Dog, who was paired with a Michigan veteran suffering from ongoing challenges as a result of his service. This year, the decision to support Deputy Hack is directly related to Oakmont’s commitment to community.
“Law enforcement and first responders are vital to the entire community, but especially our seniors. They’re in our communities on a weekly basis, and always go the extra mile to help however they can,” said Katherine Kalaydjian, Oakmont Senior Communities’ Director of Operations. “The opportunity for our seniors, our families, and our organization to give back and help an Officer in need is really something special.”
Registration for the bowling event will begin at 1:30pm on the 20th with bowling activities beginning at 2:00pm. Limited sponsorship opportunities are also available for businesses or individuals who would like to show their support. Contact Janell Allison for more information on sponsorship.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office shared the following update on Deputy Hack on April 19th:
Deputy Hack has been making great strides while recovering at a rehab facility in Colorado. Physically, he is doing excellent and is able to walk short distances on his own. He is able to speak and is having great conversations and is even making phone calls. He remains in great spirits and as a result of his wonderful progress, he will be coming back to Michigan at the beginning of May.
Below is an update shared by the wife of Deputy David Hack on the progress of his rehabilitation in March:
Dave continues with Traumatic Brain Injury rehabilitation at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado. His bodily injuries have all healed. He walked about 40 feet with assistance last week. He had the sutures removed from the cranioplasty (skull reconstruction) this week and the incision is healing nicely. He will likely have his knee brace removed also after he sees the orthopedist.
The focus of his rehabilitation is now 100% on recovering from TBI and managing the effects of long term hospitalization. Recovery from TBI is different from other medical conditions in that the doctors really can’t predict exactly what Dave’s long term outcome will be, so we hear “we don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see” a lot.
Dave works hard on his rehabilitation every single day, he has the best staff in the country assisting him and he has his family by his side supporting him. We continue to see positive progress each and every day! We love you all and appreciate all of your support. We are so grateful for the love and kindness our friends, family and community have given us!
This year, all 10 Oakmont Communities will work together to raise money for the family of Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy David Hack, who was injured in the line of duty.

Throughout 2017, Oakmont Senior Communities worked to raise more than $20,000 to adopt Whiskey – a medical service dog trained to worked with veterans impacted by the emotional and physical toll of their service. In November, at a ceremony at Oakmont Rochester Independent, Whiskey, now a fully trained medical service dog, was officially matched with Steve, a Michigan veteran of the United States Army during Desert Storm. Over the past five months, Steve and Whiskey have developed a unique and lasting bond, which has brought joy and happiness to both of their lives.
Here is an update on Whiskey and Steve’s adventures together:
As they’ve settled into their routine together, Whiskey loves accompanying Steve to work. Steve is a Certified Nursing Assistant and spends his professional life taking care of people in need. When Whiskey knows they are approaching the office, he will sit up and excitedly whine – ready to go to work and make a difference in people’s lives. Whiskey enjoys his days at work with the staff and residents, and the residents he helps serve love him too.

Whiskey has made the most of the elongated Michigan winter, actively enjoying walks in the woods and his favorite snowy pastime: snowballs. Recently, he took a walk in the woods where he met an otter and some doves but remained well-behaved and calm. During outings with Steve, strangers are always quick to compliment not only what a beautiful dog Whiskey is, but how poised and attentive he is to Steve.
